Americans Advance in Qualifying Action on Opening Day in Indian Wells, CA
Sunday’s Matches to Begin at 10 a.m. at Indian Wells Tennis Garden
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – (February 24, 2018) – Seventeen year old Claire Liu of Thousand Oaks, Calif., was one of six American women to advance to the final qualifying round of the Oracle Challenger Series – Indian Wells as she eased past Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-3 in one-hour and 35 minutes.
Liu, the 2017 Wimbledon Girls’ singles champion, will face 2012 French Open finalist Sara Errani of Italy for a spot in the main draw on Sunday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
“I just tried to get one more ball back. She (Krejcikova) hits the ball really hard and can make some really good shots. I was trying to make her play one more shot,” Liu said after her victory. “I want to get some matches and get better as each match goes on.”
Julia Boserup, a 26-year-old native of Santa Monica, Calif., also advanced to the final qualifying round with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over fellow American Ingrid Neel. She will take on Naomi Broady of Great Britain on Sunday.
Victoria Duval of Bradenton, Fla., overcame wildcard entrant Pamela Montez 6-3, 7-5 and will play fellow American Francesca Di Lorenzo on Sunday. Di Lorenzo defeated Japan’s Risa Ozaki 6-4, 6-2 in first-round qualifying action on Saturday.
Other American women advancing to Sunday’s final qualifying round include Amanda Anisimova of Aventura, Fla., a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Valeriya Strakhova of the Ukraine, and Louisa Chirico, who led fellow American Tori Kinard 4-0 in the first set when her opponent retired.
In the men’s qualifying draw, Americans Mitchell Krueger, Alexander Sarkissian, Evan Song and Marcos Giron all advanced to Sunday’s final qualifying round with straight-set victories.

Main Draw matches will get underway on Monday, February 26. Play will start each day at 10 a.m. Gates will open at 9 a.m. Admission and on-site parking for spectators at the Oracle Challenger Series – Indian Wells is free. The tournament in Indian Wells is the second event of the Oracle Challenger Series. The first event was played on January 20-28, 2018 at the Newport Beach Tennis Club in Newport Beach, Calif. Taylor Fritz of Palos Verdes, Calif., captured the men’s singles title with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over fellow American Bradley Klahn in the final. Former two-time NCAA singles champion Danielle Collins of St. Petersburg, Fla., defeated Sofya Zhuk of Russia 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the women’s singles final.
The top two male and top two female Americans with the highest accumulated points in the Oracle Challenger Series will be awarded wildcards in their respective singles main draws at the 2018 BNP Paribas Open, held March 5-18 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
