After two days of forced indoor play due to rain, the Oracle Challenger Series play was happy to move back to the outdoor courts.
American Bjorn Fratangelo and Uzbek Denis Istomin were the first to take Court 1 for today’s semifinal matchups. A windy day in the Windy City, the two played for an hour and 11 minutes before Istomin secured his spot in tomorrow’s finals: 61, 62.
The 32-year-old Uzbek, who has ranked as high as World No. 33, is the tournament’s number 2 seed. Earlier this week he beat Marcelo Arevalo of Spain, Tommy Paul of the US and Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium.
Meeting Istomin in the finals is American Reilly Opelka who beat Dominik Koepfer of Germany in straight sets: 63, 76(3). Opelka played the Oracle Challenger Series in both the Newport Beach and Indian Wells, earning one of the coveted wild cards into the BNP Paribas Open. Sunday the World No. 173 will take the championship court, in seek of his first Oracle Challenger Series titles.
