Uzbek Denis Istomin continued his perfect Chicago week with a finals match win over Reilly Opelka for the title. Istomin, who is ranked World No. 76 and was the number 2 seed in the Oracle Challenger Series Chicago. This was the first ever meet up between Istomin and Opelka, the last men standing in the tournament.
Both men relied on their serves to reach the final match. Opelka tallied a total of 77 aces throughout the week while Istomin was not once broken. “If you are good on serve, then you have a chance on return so I did well,” said Istomin. “My serve was working really well today.”
The Chicago event was Istomin’s first Oracle Challenger Series. “I really enjoyed being here and playing here, it is a very nice organization,” he complimented. “This was a really, really nice tournament.”
When asked about the wind during today’s final match Istomin gave some credit to fate. “For sure there was luck on my side today,” he smiled, “but I will take it.”
Istomin has been ranked as high as World No. 33 and has two ATP World Tour titles to his name: Nottingham in 2015 and Chengdu in 2017.
