Karlovic, Klahn Serve into Round 2

Number 3 seed and all time leading ATP World Tour ace master Ivo Karlovic of Croatia hit 10 aces against American Marcos Giron in a 2 set victory, 64 62. The World No. 102 will meet Emilio Gomez of Ecuador in the second round of play. This will be the first meeting for Gomez and Karlovic.

Frenchman Enzo Couacaud made his Oracle Challenger debut with a win. He eliminated American wild card Ronnie Schneider on court 5 in straight sets, 64 63 and will advance to the second round of play.

American qualifier Michael Redlicki eliminated Dominican Jose Hernandez-Fernandez in three sets: 64 16 64. The World No. 480 keeps his Road to Indian Wells hopes alive by securing his seat in the second round where he will meet fellow qualifier, Alexis Galarneau. Canadian Galarneau outplayed Tom Fawcett, beating the American in straight sets: 63 62.

In a showdown of Oracle Challenger Series alums, Bradley Klahn got the better of compatriot Alexander Sarkissian in 2 sets, 61 62. World No, 97 Klahn advances to battle fellow American Michael Redlicki in round 2 tomorrow.

A two hour and fifteen minute battle between Paolo Lorenzi and Stefan Kozlov ended with the Italian on top, eliminating the American in three sets: 64 36 64.

Ernesto Escobedo edged past qualifier Julian Lenz to punch his ticket into the second round. The American beat the German in three hard-fought sets, 46 63 76(6). He will do battle with Germany again tomorrow, playing Dominik Koepfer for a spot in the quarter finals.

In the battle of the doubles partners, it was Thai-Son Kwiatkowski who had the edge over Mitchell Kreuger in three sets, 76(6) 46 64. He will meet Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi in the second round tomorrow. Kreuger and Kwiatkowski will be on the same side of the court in the men’s doubles quarterfinals later this week.

Jason Jung of Taipei breezed past Dominican Roberto Cid Subervi in two sets: 61 61. This is the first Oracle Challenger Series main draw appearance for 29-year-old Jung who will meet Frenchman Enzo Couacaud in round 2 tomorrow.

Perhaps the biggest upset of the day occurred on court 5, where World No. 221 Kamil Majchrzak of Poland defeated World No. 60 and number 1 seed Tennys Sandgren in two sets: 62 75.

American Evan Song advances in a walkover. Oracle Challenger Series Chicago semifinalist Bjorn Fratangelo retired after the first set.
