16-year-old qualifier Whitney Osuigwe upset number 6 seed Varvara Lepchenko, beating her fellow American in three sets: 26 63 62. Lepchenko and Osuigwe were playing for more than quarterfinal appearances, they were battling the USTA’s 2019 Australian Open Wild Card Challenge. Osuigwe’s vicotry secures her an appearance in Melbourne this January. The Florida native advances to Friday’s quarterfinals and prepares to meet the winner of Bencic vs. Peng, which will be determined tomorrow.
The second quarterfinals seat has been reserved for American Jessica Pegula who defeated Israeli Deniz Khazaniuk 62 61. Buffalo native and World No. 125 will meet the winner of Cako vs. Stollar, taking place tomorrow.
Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi retired in the first set, giving the Oracle Challenger Series Newport Beach finalist Sofya Zhuk a direct path to the quarterfinals of the Houston event. The Russian will meet Brit Heather Watson who eliminated Hungarian Lucky Loser Reka-Luca Jani, 64 61.
