The 21-year-old Hermosa Beach, California native has been steadily climbing the ATP Tour rankings since the past August and currently holds the World No. 590 spot. Traditionally a doubles player, Oracle Challenger Series Newport Beach will mark Cressy’s first singles appearance in a Challenger tournament.
Qualifier Giuliana Olmos of Mexico eliminated wild card Carson Branstine of Canada in three sets: 75, 26, 63. Also a qualifier in the 2018 Newport Beach event, Olmos advanced all the way to the round of 16 in singles. She was also a doubles finalist in the Houston event last November. She will continue her Oracle Challenger Series Newport Beach journey with another main draw appearance.
American Katie Volynets secured her first Oracle Challenger Series main draw appearance with a three set win over China’s Alexa Guarachi: 46, 64, 63. World No. 471, Volynets looks to add her name to the Road to Indian Wells leaderboard.
