San Antonio native and World No. 633 Harrison Adams edged past compatriot and World No. 143 Tim Smyczek (number 7 seed) to secure the first spot in round 2 of the Oracle Challenger Series Houston. In what was not only the first victory of main draw play, but also the first upset. Qualifier Adams beat the Oracle Challenger Series veteran (Newport Beach, Indian Wells) in 2 sets: 63 75. This is Adams’ first appearance in an ATP Challenger Tour event and his biggest career win.
German Dominik Koepfer outlasted Spanish Marcelo Arevalo 76(4) 36 64 to move on to the second round of the Houston event. Koepfer had great success a couple of months ago at Oracle Challenger Series Chicago, falling in the semifinals to Reilly Opelka.
Emilio Gomez of Ecuador marked his Oracle Challenger Series debut with a win in Houston, defeating Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan.
