Tennis athletes in Houston have had to battle both one another and the elements, but those who prevailed have been rewarded with a beautiful finals weekend. In her latest victory, Chinese doubles sensation and Oracle Challenger Series Houston wild card recipient Peng Shuai defeated American Jessica Pegula in straight sets: 64 63.
This win advances Peng to the final round of play where she will meet American qualifier Lauren Davis. Davis has enjoyed a stellar week of tennis in Houston, charging through qualifying rounds to defeat Kristina Kucova, upset number 9 seed Nicole Gibbs and eliminate Katherine Sebov. This morning on Court 3 she added Russia’s Sofya Zhuk to the list, beating her in three sets: 36 63 60. WTA head to heads indicate that these two have met on court twice before (Wimbledon 2014 and Washington DC 2014) with each claiming a win. Peng will be chasing her third career singles title while Davis is going after her second.
By reaching the finals in Houston, Davis takes the lead in the Road to Indian Wells leaderboard. A win tomorrow would extend that lead further, propelling her one step closer to receiving one of the coveted main draw wild cards into the BNP Paribas Open.
The women’s final match between Peng and Davis will be aired on Tennis Channel tomorrow at 11:30am central. Be sure to tune in!
